Piriaka Power Station
Next Generation Scholarship Recipients 2024

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Piriaka Power Station, King Country Energy is proud to announce the recipients of the Piriaka Power Station Next Generation Scholarship for 2024. The scholarship, awarded to two outstanding individuals from Taumarunui, Arwin Leatuafi and Kelly Davey, reflects the deep connection between the Piriaka hydroelectric scheme, the Whanganui River, and the surrounding Taumarunui community.

The Piriaka Power Station, nestled on the banks of the Whanganui River, has provided power to the region for a century. Open to students enrolled in New Zealand universities, polytechnics, or apprenticeship programmes, the scholarship reflects King Country Energy’s commitment to nurturing the next generation, particularly those with strong ties to the upper Whanganui River area and the local community.

Arwin, one of the scholarship recipients, has embarked on an electrical apprenticeship this year. The scholarship will significantly ease the financial burden of starting his trade, allowing him to cover registration and course costs, as well as invest in essential tools for his future career.

“I am very lucky to have this opportunity to study something I really enjoy doing. I have family and friends in Taumarunui, and I hope in the future to use the skills I am learning to give back to my home town, which is the best place for me.”

Kelly Davey, already a qualified B-grade quarry manager, is working toward obtaining her A-grade qualification, a requirement for overseeing larger or multiple quarries. This advanced qualification, introduced in the wake of the Pike River disaster, is critical for ensuring health and safety standards in the industry. In addition learning the best practise environmental standards will ensure these practises are followed in the river quarry to minimise the impacts on water quality. Currently working at the Jilesens quarry on the Whanganui River, Kelly is faced with the challenge of self-funding the remaining courses needed to attain her A-grade certification. The scholarship will help cover her the course fees, allowing her to stay in the area and complete her studies while continuing her vital work at the local quarry.

“I was born in Taumarunui and my family have been in this area for several generations,” said Kelly. “This scholarship gives me the chance to advance my career while continuing to work in the place I love.” “The quarry, a valuable asset to the community and local economy, supports many families in Taumarunui by providing essential employment opportunities, as well as alluvial products essential for construction projects.”

King Country Energy General Manager Chris Fincham noted, “KCE was really pleased with the large number of extremely strong applications. It was a challenging process sorting out the applications, but two stood out. We all know what it is like when starting off and getting your career going. That moment or person where it suddenly changed for you, a helping hand. We are confident these scholarships will help these people achieve their goals. By investing in their futures, we’re also investing in the future of this region”
