Discover 100 Years of Hydropower at Mangahao!
Mangahao Power Station has been a cornerstone of New Zealand’s electricity generation since its official opening by Prime Minister William Massey on 3 November 1924. For 100 years, it has powered the lower North Island with renewable electricity, making significant contributions to the national grid, supporting both generation output and voltage stability.
Now, in its centenary year, King Country Energy and Manawa Energy invite you to step inside this historic powerhouse for a rare Open Day tour on Saturday, 8th March 2025.
This is a unique opportunity to explore a piece of Aotearoa New Zealand’s hydro generation history. Your ticket includes bus transport from Shannon School to the power station, where you’ll enjoy a guided tour of the station and museum. Learn how water is transformed into electricity, see hydropower in action, and discover the engineering feats that have kept Mangahao running for 100 years.
There will be entry sessions across the day, with limited places available. Due to traffic control measures, access to the power station is by bus transport only – there is no private vehicle access to the site.
Tickets are just $5, and all proceeds will be donated to local schools, supporting the next generation of learners.
Don't miss this chance to step inside 100 years of hydropower history.
